3.2 diseases Flashcards
Metabolic syndrome
The name for a group of risk factors that raise your risk for atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, type II diabetes and stroke
Metabolic Risk Factors
- Must have three of these factors
- central obesity
- elevated triglycerides
- reduced HDL cholesterol
- elevated blood pressure
- elevated fasting glucose
Metabolic Risk factors- central obesity
Waist circumference
- greater than 40 inches in men
- greater than 35 inches and women
Metabolic Risk Factors- Elevated triglycerides
150 mg or greater when untreated
Metabolic Risk factors HDL cholesterol
- Less than 40 mg for males
- less than 50 mg for females
Metabolic risk factors elevated blood pressure
Systolic 130 MMHG or Greater or
diastolic 80 MMHG or greater
Metabolic risk factors elevated fasting glucose
100 MG or greater or drug treatment for it
Health risk from metabolic syndrome
-2 to 3 times more likely to develop
heart disease
-five times more likely to develop diabetes
- increased risk of stroke
Predisposing factors metabolic syndrome- Modifiable
- abdominal obesity
- active lifestyle
- insulin resistance
preDisposing factors metabolic syndrome non-modifiable
- Personal history of diabetes
- PCOS family history of diabetes
- being female
Lifestyle factors to help metabolic syndrome
- Healthy weight e
- exercise heart
- heart healthy diet
- stress management
- quit smoking
Arthritis
Painful inflammation and stiffness of joints
Arthritis types
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid
Arthritis lifestyle intervention
- Increased movement especially yoga tai chi water aerobics
- lose weight if overweight
- anti-inflammatory diet
Osteoarthritis
- Wear and tear arthritis from use
- cartilage breaks down and
- there are changes in the bone commonly affects and hands and knees hips
Rheumatoid arthritis
- Auto immune disease
- joint tissue is attacked by the body’s immune system —- - affects any joint mostly hands wrists and knees
- factor present in blood test
Osteo arthritis risk
Older Age Obesity joint injury Overuse Female Family history of OA Race
Rheumatoid arthritis risk factors
Older age over 60 female - no children/breastfeeding lowers smoking obesity genetic-human leukocyte antigen
Rheumatoid arthritis signs and symptoms
- Pain
- stiffness
- swelling
- fatigue
- loss of function
Lifestyle changes rheumatoid arthritis
- Attain a healthy weight
- quit smoking
- exercise
Inflammation acute
- Healthy response to promote healing by increased blood flow
- swelling
- warmth
- promotes tissue repair and remove the injurious stimuli
Inflammation chronic
- Characterized by persistence and lack of clear resolution
- immune system perceives that it is under continuous attack
C reactive proteins
increased levels in the blood means inflammation
Causes of chronic inflammation
Anything perceived by the body as a foreign or harmful by the immune system like micro-organisms, allergens toxins, processed food

Fibromyalgia
- Condition that causes pain all over the body, sleep problems, fatigue and emotional and mental distress.
- Causes pain sensitivity or abnormal pain perception processing.
Fibromyalgia symptoms
- Pain and stiffness all over the body
- fatigue and tiredness
- depression and anxiety
- problems of thinking and memory
- headaches
- widespread pain at least three months without cause
- previously used tender point count
Fibromyalgia risk factors-known
- Middle age or older
- having lupus or rheumatoid arthritis
Fibromyalgia risk factors suspected
- Significant stressful trigger
- familial predisposition
- female repetitive joint injuries
- obesity
Comorbidities fibromyalgia
- Major depression
- death rate from suicide and injuries
- arthritis and other autoimmune conditions
