3.1. The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 4 lobes of the cerebrum?
- Frontal
- Temporal
- Occipital
- Parietal
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
speech, thought, learning
What is the temporal lobe responsible for?
hearing, memory
What is the occipital lobe responsible for?
vision
What is the parietal lobe responsible for?
sensory info
What is the role of the cerebellum?
- Controls motor skills/ balance
- If damaged, problems in speech and/or language
What makes up the diencephalon?
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
What does the thalamus do?
relays nerve impulses from senses to the brain
What does the hypothalamus do?
- Regulates body temp, hunger and thirst
- Links to the endocrine system
What is the role of the spinal cord?
- Relays info between the body and the brain to regulate processes and coordinate voluntary movements
- Circuit of cells perform involuntary reflex movements
- If your spinal cord is damaged, nerves below the damage may be cut off and will be unable to function
Which nervous systems make up the peripheral nervous system?
- Somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system
What is the role of the somatic nervous system?
- Controls skeletal system and muscles
- Receives info from sensory receptors -> skin/ legs
- Voluntary movement
What is the role of the autonomic nervous system?
- Controls essential life maintaining processes
- Breathing, heart rate, digestion
- Involuntary movement
What is the role of the sympathetic nervous system?
- Activated when a threat arises
- AKA fight vs flight
- Noradrenaline/ adrenaline
What is the role of the parasympathetic nervous system?
- For normal body functioning
- Relaxes body after the emergency has passed
- AKA rest of digestion
- Acetylcholine
