subjective but…..
it’s the only way of knowing what a person is thinking
questionnaires

- questions need to be clear and specific and not double-barrelled
open questions

weakness of open questions
- harder than closed questions to analyse (need context- analysis)
closed questions
Do you like …..? yes or no box
strength of closed questions

weakness of closed questions
- lacks detail and meaning
strengths of questionnaires
+ quick method to get data
+ easy to replicate
+ no ethics
+ more data can be obtained than interview
weaknesses of questionnaires
- subjective
- leads to socially desirable bias (to be seen positively)
- response set- in closed qs people answer without reading
what are interviews?
interviewer sits with interviewee and asks questions
structured interviews
a list of pre-determined questions asked in a fixed order (not allowed to ask additional questions)
strengths of structured interview
+ replicable
+ standardised
+ easy to analyse (as an answer same list of questions)
weaknesses of structured interview
- interviewer’s expectations may influence responses (way to solve = trained interviewer)
unstructured interview
no fixed questions, there is a general topic to explore but the discussion is free-flowing
