[18] Lipid Metabolism Flashcards
What is Lipid Metabolism?
It’s the process by which lipids are synthesized and degraded in cells.
What are the two main types of Lipid Metabolism?
- Lipogenesis
- Lipolysis
What is Lipogenesis?
The process of synthesizing lipids from simpler substances like glucose.
Where does Lipogenesis occur?
Mainly in the liver and adipose tissue.
What is Lipolysis?
The process of breaking down stored fats into fatty acids and glycerol.
Where does Lipolysis occur?
Mainly in the adipose tissue.
What is the purpose of Lipogenesis?
To store energy and provide insulation and protection.
What is the purpose of Lipolysis?
To release energy when it’s needed.
What hormone stimulates Lipogenesis?
Insulin.
What hormones stimulate Lipolysis?
- Glucagon
- Epinephrine
What are triglycerides?
The main form of fat storage in the body.
What is beta-oxidation?
A metabolic process in which fatty acids are broken down to generate acetyl-CoA.
Where does beta-oxidation occur?
In the mitochondria.
How many ATP molecules can the complete oxidation of a 16-carbon fatty acid yield?
About 129 ATP.
What is ketogenesis?
The production of ketone bodies during the breakdown of fatty acids.
