13. Renal disease Flashcards
ascites
accumulation of fluid in the abdomen
oesophageal varices
venous varices in the oesophagus
hypersplenism
the spleen rapidly and prematurely destroys RBCs
pancytopaenia
reduction in formed elements in the blood
gynecomastia
growth in adipose and glandular tissue in male breasts
glomerulonephritis
inflammatory disease of the glomeruli in the kidneys
glomerulosclerosis
fibrosis and scarring –> deterioration with age in glomeruli. abnormal hardening of tissue
pyelonephritis
inflammation of the pelvis of the kidney
cystitis
infalmation of hte urinary bladder
fhabdomyolysis
disintegration, breakdwon of the striated muscle fibers. excretes myoglobin in the urine
uraemia
excess urea in the blood
renal hyper tension
high BP due to renal disease (dat whole angiotensin shit)
aetiology of pyelonephritis (11)
- blockage of urinary tract
- scarring
- stones
- tumours
- large prostate
- oliguria
- anuria
- surgery
- catheter
- immune depression
complications of obstruction
stasis of urine flow –> UTIs, stone formation, atrophy of kidneys, HT, renal failure
complications of renal failure (8)
- decreased removal of urea
- potassium retention/hyperkalaemia
- metabolic acidosis
- uraemic encephalopathy
- loss of blood flow through kidney, leading to release of renin, activation of angiotensin, increased BP
- fluid retention, heart failure
- aenaemia
- risk of infections
