11. Heart Disease Flashcards
peripheral vascular disease
narrowing of blood vessels thar restricts blood flow. most occurs in legs
coronary vasospasm
constriction, decreased blood flow, therefore coronary circulation is worsened –> a type of heart attack
angina
pain or discomfort caused by insufficient blood supply (ischaemia) to heart muscle
myocardial infarct
obstruction and necrosis in circulation to a region of the heart
sudden cardiac death
unexpected death due to heart problems (occurs within 1 hour)
cardiac tamponade
when the heart is squeezed by fluid that collects inside the sac that surrounds it
ventricular aneurysm
complication of heart attack –> section of a blood vessel balloons
cardiac failure
heart cannot pump blood anymore
congestive heart failure
heart is congested (veno capillary congestion, HT and oedema) therefore decrease in cardiac output
aneurysms
localised sac dilation on a wall. artery vein or heart
tachycardia
fast heart rate
ventricular fibrillation
rapid, uncoordinated, ineffective series of contractions throughout the lower chambers of the heart.
endocarditiis
inflammation of the inner linings of the heart muscle
Ischaemic heart disease - aetiology
atherosclerosis, thrombosis
clinical effects of ischaemic heart disease (4)
- angina (chest pain)
- myocardial infarct
- sudden cardiac death
- chronic ischaemic heart disease
