12. Stroke Flashcards
difference between TIA and stroke
TIA is small, lasts for 1-24 hours (caused by disruption to blood supply to the brain)
stroke
acute focal neurlogical deficit
cause of stroke
disruption to blood supply
embolic stroke
stroke due to cerebral embolism
aetiology of ischaemic strokes (2)
- atheroma and thrombosis
2. embolism
aetiology of haemorrhage stroke (2)
- intracerebral haemorrhage (HT, aneurysm)
2. subarachnoid haemorrhage – ruptured berry aneurysms
effects of intracerebral haemorrhage stroke
immediate: pressure on brain tissue, vessel breakage, loss of blood to brain
delayed: oedema and inflammation
effects of subarachnoid haemorrhage
immediate: loss of blood flow to brain, pressure against brain
delayed: rebleed, cerebral vasospasm
cryptogenic strokes aetiology
unknown cause
cause of death from all strokes (5)
- pneumonia
- cardiovascular
- septicaemia
- transtentorial herniation
- pulmonary embolism
