Zoonotic Diseases Flashcards
rabies
viral disease
transmitted in saliva
need to treat before onset of symptoms (prophylactic treatment)
rabies infection
virus enters muscle tissue via bite
travels to nervous tissue to multiply, spreads to spinal cord and brain
clinical stages (ex. in dog)
prodromal/incubation (2-3 days): may see subtle changes
excitative/furious stage (1-7 days): animal is aggressive, biting/chewing is common
paralytic/dumb stage (2-4 days): uncoordinated, muscles paralyzed
death, often due to paralyzed diaphgram
human symptoms of rabies
itching around bite, flu like symptoms that go away
muscle aches, hypersensitivity to light/sound, gradual paralysis
time until symptoms
dogs: up to 2 weeks
humans: 30-60 days
treating a bite
virus is fragile, can be killed by soap and hot water
lyme disease
primarily spread by deer ticks
baylis ascaris
roundworm found in racoons
common to travel to brain, cause death
west nile virus
transmitted by mosquitos
most don’t show symptoms
how do mosquitos get west nile?
from biting infected birds
tuberculosis
bacterial infection
large problem in humans until antibiotics discovered
brucellosis
spread by cattle, sheep, goats
humans get it from unpasteurized products of infected animals
