Canine Health Flashcards
quarantine
can protect current animals from new animals
very difficult to do
best to check vaccination history
calcium supplements
don’t feed to pups, especially large breed
can alter calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D ratio
can cause joint damage
vaccinations
active immunity
need to vaccinate multiple times
DHLP-P, rabies
distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus
why do we vaccinate so often in first few months?
titer (measure of # of antibodies)
if pup is too young and still has antibodies from mother, titer is too high, vaccines won’t be effective
once passive immunity is gone, vaccines will be effective
not all pups get the same amount of antibodies, which is why they are all vaccinated multiple times so that at least one will be effective
puppy shots
different from vaccinations
antiserum/immunoglobulins
given if pup is at high risk or didn’t get colostrum
passive immunity
viral diseases
distemper: respiratory, annual booster vaccinations
hepatitis: affects liver
parvovirus: bloody diarrhea and dehydration, highly contagious
coronavirus: similar to parvovirus
rabies
para-influenza: part of kennel cough
bacterial diseases
bordetella: other part of kennel cough
leptospirosis: spread through urine, can affect humans
