Zinc Flashcards
What is the function of zinc?
cofactor of many CHO, RNA enzymes, Cu-Zn superoxide dimutase, thymosin
What are diet sources of zinc?
liver and forages (dependent on soil concentration of zinc)
What are synthetic sources of zinc?
zinc sulfate, zinc oxide, zinc chloride, zinc carbonate
What interferes with zinc absorption?
high dietary calcium, or high diet or water iron
What does zinc deficiency present as?
reduced feed intake, reduced growth rate, infertility, reduced growth of testes, weak hoof horn, parakeratosis of the legs head and neck
How does zinc deficiency present in swine?
develop lesions of the superficial layers of the epidermis
What are early signs of parakeratosis in swine?
symmetrically distributed areas of excessive keratinization of the skin, scaly skin and cracks
What does severe parakeratosis present as in swine?
impaired growth, anorexia, and lethargy
What leads to zinc deficiency in dogs and some cattle?
it is a genetic deficiency that reduces zinc absorption
What breeds of dogs and cattle usually have the genetic defect?
black pied and dutch-fresian cattle, alaskan huskies and malamutes
How does zinc deficiency affect dogs and cattle?
the calves and pups appear normal at birth but develop scaly thickened skin over neck and shoulders, susceptible to infection
What is chondrodysplasia and what animal is it associated with?
dwarfism in malamutes
How do you combat chondrodysplasia?
feed a high zinc diet
What causes zinc toxicity?
the ingestion of coins, nuts, and bolts
What are symptoms of zinc toxicity?
hemolytic crisis, icterus, anorexia, vomiting, anemia, elevated liver enzymes
