What is vitamin B3?

What is niacin required for?
the enzymes that are essential for the metabolism of carbs, proteins, and lipids
What does niacin deficiency present as?
poor growth, dry rough skin, diarrhea from intestinal cell necrosis and ulceration
What can some animals convert into niacin?
tryptophan, but it is insufficient to supply the needs of the animal
What are dietary sources of niacin?
soybean meal and some other plant products
What is pellagra?
black tongue caused by deficiency of tryptophan or naicin
What species usually gets pellagra and why?
dogs because they are fed on a corn based diet
What are symptoms of pellagra?
black tongue, rough, and dry skin and they lose papillae on their tongue
How can niacin prevent ketosis?
because it is anti-lipolytic and prevents the build up of liver fat which leads to ketosis
When should niacin be fed in order to prevent ketosis?
around the time of calving because the high demands of milk production and poor feed intake leads to insufficient bacterial niacin production in the rumen
Other than ketosis, what can niacin be used for?
to treat yeast and staph infections
