Vitamin D Flashcards
What is vitamin D vital in?
the metabolism of calcium, and it is a precursor to hormone 1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D, the absorption of phosphorus
What are dietary sources of vitamin D?
sunshine, fish, and liver
What are synthetic sources of vitamin D?
vitamin D3, lanolin, vitamin D2
What shuts off production of vitamin D?
fibroblast growth factor 23
What is vitamin D3?
choleocalciferol
How is choleocalciferol made?
by irradiating skin of most species
What species cannot make choleocalciferol?
dogs and cats
What is vitamin D2?
ergocalciferol
What is ergocalciferol found in?
sun cured plant products, mushrooms, and sunlight irradiated yeast
What can vitamin D deficiency cause?
rickets, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism
How does vitamin D play a role in rickets in pigs?
pigs are deficient because of low placental vitamin D and low vitamin D in milk
What species cannot get vitamin D deficient?
horses and rabbits
How does calcium and vitamin D relate?
when blood calcium levels are low, the kidney decreases its excretion and secretes vitamin D to increase Ca absorption
What does vitamin D deficiency cause in turtles and iguanas?
NSHP
What are symptoms of vitamin D toxicity?
soft tissue calcification, weight loss, and kidney failure
