What are the functions of folic acid?
amino acid metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis, neurotransmitter production
What species is at greatest risk for folic acid deficiency?
poultry because they have a high rate of passage
What does folic acid deficiency present as?
reduced growth, poor hair coat, poor feather development, macrocytic hypochromic anemia, and slipped tendon perosis
What is used in place of folic acid to treat for coccidia?
sulfonamides and ethopabate, folic acid antagonists
What can sulfonamides and ethopabate cause?
the intestinal microbes from producing folate which causes folic acid deficiency
What is perosis/slipped tendon?
the deformity of hocks, elargement of the condyle, bowing of the tarsometatarsus, slipping of the gastrocnemius tendon
What nutrient deficiencies can cause perosis?
manganese, choline, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid, and niacin
