Wk 2 Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
How many neurons are involved in sympathetic motor responses?
2:
preganglionic
postganglionic
Sympathetic nerve roots are found at what spinal cord level?
T1-L2
L2 is coincidentally the level of the conus medullaris in adults
What nerves make up the parasympathetic nervous system?
CNIII, CNVII, CNIX, CNX and S2, 3, and 4
Where are the cell bodies of preganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers found?
Lateral gray horn in cord
intermediolateral cell nucleus
What are the two types of sympathetic ganglia?
paravertebral
prevertebral
What are the 4 routes that presympathetic nerve fibers can take once entering the sympathetic chain?
- synpase
- ascend
- descend
- exit sympathetic chain via splanchnic (visceral) nerves
Differentiate between white and gray rami
White = myelinated preganglionic fibers, distal loop Gray = unmyelinated postganglionic fiberals, proximal loop
How many pairs of white rami are there?
14 pairs (T1-L2)
How many pairs of gray rami are there?
31 pairs (same as spinal nerves)
What regions do splanchnic nerves innervate?
Abdominopelvic area
Sympathetic fibers can run directly to this organ
Adrenal glands (medulla)
4 cholinergic receptor types, neurotransmitter, location, and action
α1: NE blood vessels excitatory
α2: NE postganglionic fiber inhibitory
β1: NE heart excitatory
β2: Epi lungs inhibitory
Where are the cell bodies of parasympathetic preganglionic fibers located?
at nerve origin site
Where are the cell bodies of parasympathetic postganglionic fibers located?
on target tissue
What type of neurotransmitter do parasympathetic nerve fibers release?
ACh (pre- and post-ganglionic)
