Week 8 - CNS other Neurotransmitters Pathways Flashcards
Where are the Cell bodies of NA?
Pons and medulla
Where is the most prominent cluster of NA?
Locus coeruleus
Where does NA branch into?
Front, parietal and occiptal lobes, then into the spinal cord
What is stimulation of the NA pathway associated with?
behaviour arousal such as wake up stimuli unfamiliar/threatening stimuli mood BP
How do amphetamines affect NA pathway?
They release catecholamines centrally
- produce wakefulness, alertness, exploratory activity
What are the 4 main pathways Dopamine is associated with?
Nigrostriatal
Mesolimbic
Mesocortical
Tuberohypophyseal
Where are the Nigrostriatal Dopamine pathway?
cell bodies in the substantia nigra
axons terminate in the corpus striatum
What is the Nigrostriatal dopamine pathway associated with?
Motor control
Where are the Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathways?
Cell bodies in the Midbrain Ventral Tegmental Area
Terminate in the Limbic system
What are the Mesolimbic Dopamine Pathways associated with?
Behavioural effects
Where are the Mesocortical Dopamine Pathways?
Cell bodies in the Midbrain Ventral Tegmental area
Terminate in the Frontal Cortex
What are the Mesocortical Dopamine Pathways associated with?
Behavioural effects
Where are the Tuberhypophyseal Dopamine Pathways?
Run from the Ventral hypothalamus
Terminate in the pituitary gland
What are the Tuberhypophyseal Dopamine Pathways associated with?
Endocrine control
Where are the 5-HT CNS Pathways?
Cell bodies in the Pons/Upper Medellum (Raph Nuclei)
Branch into
- cerebullum, corpus striatum, frontal, parietal, occipital lobes
