Week 8 - CNS Analgesics Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two main classes of analgesics?
A
- opiod analgesics
- NSAIDs
2
Q
What are the mechanism of actions for opioid analgesics?
A
Act at specific receptors
- mu (μ)
- delta (δ)
- kappa (κ)
3
Q
What are the characteristics of mu receptors?
A
- endogenous ligand = enkephalin
- CNS effects = analgesia, euphoria, sedation, respiratory depression, cough reflex inhibition.
- Peripheral effects = inhibition of gut motility, vasodilation
4
Q
What are the characteristics of delta receptors?
A
- endogenous ligand = enkephalin
- Distributed in the CNS
- Effects of stimulation = analgesia
5
Q
What are the characteristics of kappa receptors?
A
- endogenous ligands = dynorphin
- Distributed = CNS, peripheral tissues
- CNS effects = analgesia, diuresis, dysphoria
