Week 6 - Gastrointestinal - Reflux Flashcards
1
Q
What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder?
A
Dysfunction in LOS
- allows material to flow back up into oesophagus
2
Q
What can occur from excessive GERD?
A
- reflux oesophagitis
- peptic ulcer (also in duodenum)
3
Q
What can damage GI mucosal barrier?
A
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Increased acid
4
Q
What is the treatment for Reflux?
A
Reduce gastric acid production
- antacids
- Histamine (H2) receptor antagonists
- proton pump inhibitors
5
Q
What is the action, composition and side effects of Antacids?
A
- pH neutralisers - peptic activity cease at pH5
- hydroxides, trisilicates, bicarbonates
- Mg = diarrhoea
- Al = constipation
6
Q
What is the action, and examples of H2 antagonists?
A
- Inhibit parieetal cell HCl secretion
- inhibit basal and stimulated acid secretion
- eg Cimetidine, ranitidine
7
Q
What is the mechanism, action and example of Proton Pump Inhibitors?
A
- Inhibit H/K/ATPase that pump H into lumen
- Irreversibly inhibit basal and stimulated acid secretion
eg. Omeprazole
