What are the differences between mental and physical illness?
People often don’t believe themselves to be ill, there is no scientific basis to diagnosis (diagnose by symptom cluster creating uncertainty), there is lack of treatment
What are some symptoms of anxiety?
Periods of intense anxiety ie panic attack (feeling of fear or dread) with sudden fear, heart racing, palpitations, sweating, dry mouth, splanchnic vasoconstriction, pins and needles around mouth and lips, syncope (fainting), depersonalization
What are ruminations?
They are developed obsessional thoughts that the patient knows to be silly but cannot get them out of their head
What are some symptoms of OCD?
Repetitive ruminations that sound bizarre or delusional, resistance leads to anxiety, ego-dystonic thoughts
What are compulsions?
Motor response to obsessional thoughts eg handwashing, counting, checking locks where they often start again if interrupted or they have doubt
How can you classify anxiety?
Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, acrophobia (fear of leaving their house), social phobia (a fear of scrutiny from others), OCD and maybe PTSD
Describe population health burden of anxiety
Very under diagnosed, under treated
What are some symptoms of depression?
Low mood, low energy (anergia), loss of enjoyment.
Physical: weight loss, loss of libido, loss of appetite, poor sleep
Psychological: feeling of guilt, suicidal thoughts, low self esteem, poor concentration
How is depression treated?
Antidepressant medication, psychological therapy, social prescription
How is anxiety treated?
Cognitive behavior therapy, medication
What are symptoms of mania?
Elated mood, poor judgement, little need for sleep, over spending, over energized, irritable
What is manic depression?
Periods of depression then manic episodes
