W9-L1: Estimating Body Composition Flashcards
SIMPLE SCREENING
What are the 3 SOMATOTYPES?
What are the 5 methods of
Estimating Body Composition?
- Hydrodensitometry e.g. underwater weighing
- Air Displacement Plethysmography e.g. bod pod
- DXA
- Bio electrical impedance
- Skinfolds
What are the Considerations of using Hydrodensitometry?
(e.g. underwater weighing )
Equipment, complete submersion and willing to expel all air from lungs
What are the Considerations of using
Air Displacement Plethysmography? (e.g. bod pod)
Equipment, subject must stay still and quiet,
size restrictions in bod pod
What are the Considerations of using DXA?
Equipment, exposure to low radiation
What are the Considerations of using
Bio electrical impedance?
Many external factors can effect results e.g. hydration status, training, body position, equations are manufacturer IP
What are the Considerations of using
Skinfolds?
Technician expertise, equations
What is BMI?
What are the advantages of BMI?
Advantages:
- Cheap, Quick, Simple
- Non invasive
- Assess risk of obesity related diseases
- Useful for population assessment
What are the disadvantages of BMI?
Disadvantages:
- Classification based on Caucasian male population
- Does not differentiate b/w body weight (muscle) & body fat
- Doesn’t consider body fat distribution
