W13: Microbiome Flashcards
What are Microbiota?
a collective term for the
micro-organisms that live in or on the human body
What is a Microbiome?
the entire habitat, including the microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, fungi and viruses), their genomes (i.e., genes), and the surrounding environmental condition
What are Fermented Foods?
foods made through desired
microbial growth & enzymatic conversions
of food components e.g yogurt
What are Probiotics?
live microorganisms which we administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host
What are prebiotics?
substrate that is selectively utilized by our gut microbes to confer a health benefit
What are Microbiota-Accessible Carbohydrates (MACs)?
carbohydrates (or a type of dietary fiber) that are metabolically available by the gut microbiome
eg. insulin (garlic), resisitant starch (cooked & cooled pasta, rice & Potatoes), pectin (fruit), B-glucan (oats)
What are the Functions of the microbiome (metagenomics)?

What factors influence the microbiome?
