VUSCULTURE OF THE EYEBALL Flashcards
nerves of the orbit = optic nerve CN VII
Optic nerve (CN II) special sensory, optical stimuli
nerves of the orbit= OCULOMOTOR CN VIII
Oculomotor nerve (CN III) motor and parasympathetic via ciliary ganglion and short ciliary nerve to the ciliary body and pupillae constrictor
nerves of the orbit= Trochlear nerve (CN IV)
Trochlear nerve (CN IV) motor
nerves of the orbit= Abducent nerve (CN VI)
Abducent nerve (CN VI) motor
nerves of the orbit= facial nerve CN VII
Facial nerve (CN VII)
parasympathetic to lacrimal
gland via the pterygopalatine
ganglion and zygomatic nerve
Ophthalmic nerve (CN V1) sensory:
① Frontal nerve
② Nasociliary nerve*
③ Lacrimal nerve
Postsynaptic sympathetic fibers from the superior cervical ganglion and internal carotid plexus that travel through the ciliary ganglion
① The short ciliary nerve to the
ciliary body and intra‐ocular
vessels
And not via the ciliary
ganglion
① The long ciliary nerve* to
dilator pupillae
arterial supply of the eye
arterial supply to the structures of the orbit including the eyeball is by the ophthalmic artery which branched from the internal carotid artery, it enters the optic canal together with the optic nerve
- lacrimal artery
supply the lacrimal gland, conjunctiva, and eyelids
- central retinal artery
supply the optic retina except for the cones and rods
- the long posterior ciliary arteries
supply the ciliary body of the iris
- the small posterior ciliary arteries
supply cones and rods of the optic retina
- muscular arteries
supply intrinsic muscles of the eyeball
- supraorbital artery
supply the forehead and scalp
- dorsal nasal artery
The dorsal nasal artery à supplies the upper surface of the nose
- anterior ethmoidal artery
supplies the anterior and middle ethmoidal cells, septum, nasal cavity
- posterior ethmoidal artery
supplies the posterior ethmoidal cells
- supra-trochlear artery
supplies the forehead
arterial supply is also from the infra-orbital artery a branch from
the third part of the maxillary artery
veins of the eyes
Superior and inferior
ophthalmic veins to the
cavernous sinus
The central vein of the retina
may drain via the inferior
the ophthalmic vein or directly
to the cavernous sinus
Vorticose veins drain via
the inferior ophthalmic
veins to the cavernous sinus
Scleral venous sinus drains
aqueous humor
the superior ophthalmic vein is formed by the union of
supra-orbital and angular vein
veins communicate with pterygoid plexus of veins
through inferior orbital fissure
