•Numerous small buccal glands lie between
the mucous
membrane and the buccinator muscles
•Superficial to the buccinators are encapsulated collections of
fat
i.e. The buccal fat pads which are proportionately larger in infants
•Its assumed function is to reinforce the cheeks and keep them
from collapsing during sucking
