PALATE Flashcards
description of the palate
forms the roof of the oral cavity and the floor of the nasal cavity
structure of palate= hard palate
- anterior 2/3 is palatine process of maxilla bones
2. posterior 1/3 is horizontal plates of the palatine bones
hard palate, above it is covered by respiratory mucosa and forms
the floor of the nasal cavities
hard palate, below it is covered by a tightly bound layer of
oral mucosa and forms much of the roof of the oral cavity
the mucosa of the hard palate in oral cavity possesses numerous transverse palatine folds(palatine rugae) and
and a median longitudinal ridge(palatine raphe)
soft palate is
movable by four muscles
soft palate is suspended to hard palate by
palatine aponeurosis
soft palate has a soft free margin called
uvula
soft palate act as a valve
INF= depressed to help close the oropharyngeal isthmus(seal off oral cavity e.g holding water in the mouth while breathing)
S= elevated to separate the nasopharynx from the oropharynx= ( seal off nasal cavity when swallowing)
features of palate
- consists of a bony plate covered above and below by mucosa
- embedded palatine glands secrete saliva
muscles of the palate arises from the
base of the skull and descend to palate
tensor veli palatini
- sup attachment= ( sphenoid fossa of medial pterygoid plate, spine of sphenoid bone, cartilage of pharyngotympanic tube)
- inferior attach= palatine aponeurosis
- IN= medial pterygoid nerve which is a branch of mandibular nerve CNV3 via otic ganglion
- MA= a. tenses soft palate
b. opens mouth of pharyngotympanic tube during swallowing and yawning
levater veli palatini
SA= cartilage of pharyngotympanic tube and petrous part of the temporal bone
IA= palatine aponeurosis
IN= pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve CNX via pharyngeal plexus
MA= elevates soft palate during swallowing and yawning
platoglossus
- SA= palatine aponeurosis
- IA= side of the tongue
- IN= pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve CNX via pharyngeal plexus
- MA= elevates posterior part of the tongue and draws soft palate onto tongue
platopharyngeus=muscle of the tongue
- SA= hard palate and palatine aponeurosis
- IA= lateral wall of pharynx
- IN= pharyngeal branch of vagus nerve CNX via pharyngeal plexus
- MA= tenses soft palate and pulls walls of pharynx superiorly, anteriorly and medially during swallowing
