GINGIVAE/GUMS Flashcards
descriptions
- it is continuous with the lips
function of the gums
it is fibrous tissue covered with mucous membrane
extension
covers alveolar ridges-where teeth are inserted
structure
- free gingiva= most coronal part of the gingiva, attached to enamel and it is not very strong
- attached gingiva= connected firmly to alveolar bone and roots of teeth
- alveolar mucosa= unattached mucosa below attached gingiva
The gingiva proper (attached gingiva) is firmly attached to the
alveolar
processes of the mandible and maxilla and the necks of teeth
The gingiva proper adjacent to the tongue is the
superior and inferior
lingual gingivae
Gingivae adjacent to the lips and cheeks is the
maxillary and
mandibular labial or buccal gingiva respectively
•The gingiva proper is normally
pink, stippled and keratinizing
The alveolar mucosa (unattached to the gingiva) is normally
shiny red
and non-keratinizing
arteries of gingiva
- supra-periosteal arteries
- blood vessels of the periodontal ligament
- arterioles of the alveolar bone
innervation of the gingiva
- maxillary arch = branches of maxillary nerve CNV2
2. mandibular arch= branches of mandibular nerve CNV3
