Vitamin E Flashcards
How was vitamin E discovered
rats given rancid lard could not reproduce, but could after providing them with wheat germ.
What are some excellent sources of vitamin E
wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, sunflower oil, safflower oil, hazelnuts
What are some good sources of Vitamin E
avocado, broccoli, kiwi
What are the forms of Vitamin E
alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherol and alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocotrienol
How are tocotrienols digested
Hydrolyzed by pancreatic esterase and duodenal mucousal esterase
How is vitamin E absorbed
via passive diffusion in the jejunum, incoprorated in chylomicrons, HDL, LDL
Give an example of a vitamin E transporter
NPC1L1 (gamma tocotrienol)
What are the S/S of Vitamin E deficiency
ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, loss of coordination, skeletal muscle pain (myopathy), weakness
What populations are at a higher risk of vitamin E deficiency
fat malabsorption (cystic fibrosis, hepatobiliary disorders, genetic defects) and hemolytic anemia
How does one assess vitamin E status
Plasma alpha tocopherol, erythrocyte hemylosis
What assessment indicates deficiency
plasma alpha tocopherol <5mg/L
What assessment indicates toxicity
plasma alpha tocopherol >20mg/L
What are the S/S of Vitamin E Toxicity
GI distress, nausea, diarrhea, flatulence, muscle weakness, fatigue, double vision
What is the RDA for vitamin E
Adults 15mg, Lactating 19mg
What is the TUL for vitamin E
200-800mg intake
