Phosphorous Flashcards
What are the general sources of phosphorous
meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, diary
what are some excellent sources of phosphorous
milk, yogurt, tuna, chicken thigh, halibut, salmon, chicken breast
what are some good sources of phosphorous
beef sirloin, ground beef, mixed nuts, peanut butter
How is phosphorous found
free or bound to proteins, sugars, lipids. Especially phytic acid (80%)
How is phosphorous digested
bound phosphates must be digested by zinc dependent phospholipase C or zinc dependent alakaline phosphatase
Where is phosphorous absorbed
Jejunum
What is bioavaliability of phosphorous
50-80% dietary, 80-100% food addatives
How is phosphorous absorbed
in a two step process requiring carrier-mediated active transport and passive diffusion
Transporter needed for phosphorous absorption
sodium-phosphate, Na+Pi cotransporter (NiPi2b)
Name influences of phosphorous absorptions
calcitrol increases phosphorous absorption through magnesium, aluminium, and ca complexes. High doses of Niacin influence absorption.
What is phosphorous deficiency called
hypophosphatemia
What are high risk populations for hypophosphatemia
X-linked phyophosphatemia, chronic alcohol consumption, infants
What are S/S of hypophosphatemia
Arrythmias, decreased diaphragmatic contractility, respiratory failure, skeletal muscle and cardiac myopathy, ataxia, paresthsia
how do we assess status of phosphorous
serum phosphorous
what serum phosphrous concentrations indicate deficiency (moderate, severe)
severe <1.0mg/dL, deficiency < 1.5mg/dL
