Vascular tumors Flashcards

Lymphangiosarcoma
(notice mastectomy)

Pyogenic granuloma
(Notice ulcercation and polypoid-ness)
From where do glomus tumor arise?
Modified smooth muscle cells of glomus body
(Glomus body is AV shunt involved in temperature regulation via constriction and dilation of blood vessels)

Cherry hemangioma
Associations of angiosarcoma
Arsenic, PVC, Thorotrast/post-radiation
Outcome of cherry hemagioma vs. strawberry hemangioma
Cherry hemangioma does NOT regress, while strawberry hemangioma does
When do strawberry hemangiomas appear?
First few weeks of life
Why are angiosarcomas difficult to treat?
Rapidly progressive + delayed diagnosis
Elderly patients
Cherry hemangioma
Frequency increases with age
Cherry hemangioma
Associated with Turner syndrome
Cystic hygroma
Pyogenic granuloma associated with:
Pregnancy and trauma
Where do angiosarcomas typically arise?
Head, neck, and breat of eldery patients; sun-exposed areas
Associated with sun-exposed areas
Angiosarcoma

Strawberry hemangioma
Associated with trauma and pregnancy
Pyogenic granuloma
Cystic hygroma associated with:
Turner syndrome

Glomus tumor
Associated with radiation and arsenic
Angiosarcoma
Polypoid capillary hemangioma that can ulcerate and bleed
Pyogenic granuloma
Benign, painful, red-blue tumor under fingernail
Glomus tumor
Hemangioma vs. purpura
Hemangioma is proliferation of blood vessels so pressing on it will cause blanching
Purpura are bleeds within the skin so pressing on them will not cause blanching
Seen in AIDS and transplant patients, as well as older Eastern European males
Kaposi sarcoma (HHV-8)
Treatment for strawberry hemangioma
Leave it alone - regresses by 5-8 years old
Benign capillary hemangioma of infancy
Strawberry hemangioma
Caused by persistent lymphedema
Lymphangiosarcoma

Angiosarcoma
(Sun-exposed area in elderly patient)
Associated with PVC, aresnic, and Thorotrast/post-radiation
Angiosarcoma of liver
Cavernous lymphangioma of neck
Cystic hygroma
Rapidly progressive
Strawberry hemangioma
Associated with post-radical mastectomy
Lymphangiosarcoma
