What is cystitis?
A UTI which has spread to the bladder.
What are some referral points for UTIs?
First time
Man, child, pregnant, elderly/frail
UTI after surgery
Severe symptoms such as lower stomach or back pain, just under the ribs
Persistent symptoms after antibiotics.
Symptoms don’t improve within 2-3 days.
Fever and/or shivering
Temp <36C
Blood in urine
Drowsiness and confusion
Recurring
OTC UTI/cystitis treatment
Paracetamol/Ibuprofen
Sodium citrate products - alkaline/reduces acidity of urine to prevent burning when urinating. TDS for 2 days. Avoid if kidney disease, diabetes, or low sodium diet.
OTC recurrent UTI prevention
D-mannose products - sugar which coats bacteria to prevent it attaching to uroepithelial cells. Avoid in pregnancy and diabetes.
Cranberry capsules, sachets, or juice - avoid in warfarin. Ensure sugar free. Avoid in warfarin (increased serum warfarin) and aspirin, as well as other blood thinners.
UTI lifestyle advice
- Wipe from front to back
- Drink plenty of fluids and particularly water
- Wash and wee after sex
- Don’t hold your wee
- Fully empty your bladder when you go to the toilet.
- Avoid sugary food or drinks as it can encourage bacterial growth.
- Avoid coffee and alcohol as can be dehydrating.
