What are some common symptoms of colic?
Crying for more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, for at least 1 week.
Usually in later afternoon and evening
Episodes of irritability, fussing, or crying which start for no apparent reason.
Fist clenching
Bringing their tummy up to their knees and arching their back.
They go red in the face or frown/grimace.
Their tummy rumbles or they’re very windy.
Counselling/lifestyle points for colic?
Reassure the parents that infantile colic is common and usually resolves by 6 months.
Signpost to support groups such as Cry-sis.
Remember to look after your own wellbeing.
If you notice regurgitation or constipation, it may indicate a different issue.
If breastfeeding, avoid caffeine or spicy foods.
Hold or cuddle baby during crying episodes.
Sit or hold baby upright during feeds to stop them swallowing air, then wind baby after.
gently rock baby over shoulder or rock/push them in pram.
Bath baby in warm water
Have some gentle white noise to distract them.
What is colic?
Repeated episodes of excessive and inconsolable crying in an infant that otherwise appears to be healthy and thriving
What medicinal products can be used for colic?
Anti-colic drops exist (Infacol, Colief), and herbal/probiotic supplements have been said to help but there is little evidence to suggest they work.
Also, do not recommend changing maternal diet, or manipulating spine and cranium of baby.
How do colic drops work?
Contain dimethicone, activated simethicone, which alters surface tensions to combine has and relieve-gas related symptoms.
