Acne lifestyle advice

A

Wash affected area with a mild unscented soap or cleanser and lukewarm water after waking and before bed.

Don’t wash more than 2x a day as can irritate skin.

Avoid oil-based (comedogenic) make-up, skincare, and suncare products.

Wash hair regularly and avoid it touching acne-prone areas.

Ensure hands are clean if touching face.

Avoid sugary foods and drinks.

Don’t pick or squeeze spots as can make worse, cause infection, or scarring.

Referral for acne.

A

Widespread whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules, as well as presence of nodules and cysts.

Sudden unexpected acne in adult women, especially if accompanied by irregular/light periods or excessive body hair - could be PCOS.

6 weeks of benzoyl peroxide use.

Infection - yellow, inflamed, fever.

Causes of acne.

A

Puberty - increased testosterone.
Periods
The pill, steroid medicines, lithium, anti-epileptics
Oily cosmetic products
High glycaemic index diet

OTC treatments for acne.

A

Acnecide - 5% Benzoyl peroxide cream/gel. Antiseptic.
Use minimal amount 1-2x a day after washing face.
UV sensitivity - avoid sun and use SPF. If issue, use before bed.
Can bleach clothes and hair.
Can cause irritation and redness.
No improvement after 6 weeks see doctor.
