What are some common symptoms of teething?
Sore, red gums.
Infant rubbing gums or ear.
One flushed/rashy cheek
Dribbling more than usual
Gnawing and chewing
Decreased appetite
Irritable
Disturbed sleep
Mild fever <38C
What is the usual development of teething?
5-7 months: bottom incisors/front teeth
6-8 months: top incisors/front teeth
9-11 months: top lateral incisors (either side of front teeth)
10-12 months: bottom lateral incisors (either side of front teeth)
12-16 months: first molars (back teeth)
16-20 months: canines
20-30 months: second molars
Usually have all milk teeth by 2.5 years.
What is some lifestyle advice for teething babies?
Take baby to dentist at around 6 months, preferably before the first tooth.
Brush teeth twice a day as soon as they are visible.
Gently rub gum with clean fnger.
Use clean/cool objects for chewing such as chilled teething ring or cold wet flannel.
Wipe away excess saliva regularly to reduce facial rash.
See GP if become systemically unwell, severely distressed, or prolonged symptoms.
What OTC products can be provided for teething?
- Paracetamol/ibuprofen liquid if >3 months
- Lidocaine teething gels such as Dentinox if >5 months or Bonjela teething gel if >6 months.
Don’t recommend oral salicylate gels such as normal Bonjela or Teejel as they can cause Reye’s syndrome in under 16s,
Don’t recommend homeopathic teething tablets, gels, or powders.
How should teething gel be used?
- Check age for licensing.
- Wash hands
- Place a small amount on a pad of cotton wool or a clean fingertip and rub gently on the baby’s gum.
- Repeat after 20 minutes if necessary.
Use when necessary during the teething period. - Store in fridge after opening and dispose after 3 weeks.
