Lifestyle advice for sprain/strain

A

Rest and raise ankle when you can
Apply ice wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes every 2-3 hours.
Wrap a bandage round joint to support it.
Gently and regularly stretch joint.
Take paracetamol.
Avoid ibuprofen for first 48h.
Do not bear weight or walk for long periods.

Sprain/strain referral

A

GP:
Pain does not improve after 2 weeks.
Pain is worsening
Tingling or numbness in foot/hand
If you hurt your ankle and have diabetes.

A&E:
You heard a snap.
Your joint appears to be an odd shape.
