How does eczema present in babies?

Itchy/dry/cracked/sore skin appearing on the face, scalp, and extensor skin surfaces (outside of joints).

How does eczema present in children?

Itchy/dry/cracked/sore skin appearing on flexural skin surfaces (inside joints)

Question 3

When would eczema be diagnosed?

Answer 3

Itchy skin + 3 of:
Presence of flexural eczema
History of flexural eczema
Dry skin in past 12 months
History of asthma or allergies
Onset of symptoms before 2 years.

Question 4

OTC treatment of eczema.

Answer 4

Emollients:
E45
Hydromol
Zerobase
Cetraben

Antihistamines

1% hydrocortisone cream

Question 5

Emollients counselling for eczema

Answer 5

Apply frequently and liberally to affected area, even if not flared up.
Smooth it in line with hair growth, don’t rub it in.
Avoid using scented products. Wash with emollient in shower, then pat dry, and while still damp, apply more emollient.

Question 6

Topical corticosteroid counselling for eczema.

Answer 6

Don’t use for longer than 7 days - see GP.
Use fingertip units - one fingertip covers 2 palms.
Use minimal amounts.
Avoid on thin or sensitive skin - systemic absorption.
Use 30 minutes after emollient.
Use 1-2x a day.
May cause mild depigmentation or hypertrichosis.

Eczema lifestyle advice.

Answer 7

Usually goes away, but can persist into adulthood.
At higher risk of allergies and asthma.
Try not to itch. Wear gloves or cut nails to prevent scratching while asleep.
Identify and avoid triggers - foods, environments, fabrics, heat.
Wear loose fitting clothing.

Can give emollients for itchiness.
