Cold sore symptoms
Tingling, itching, burning feeling.
Development of blister/sore on face, usually around lips.
Usually lasts 10 days.
How long are cold sores contagious for?
From initial tingling feeling to when it has completely healed.
How to stop cold sores spreading?
Wash hands with soap and water whenever you touch it.
Do not kiss anyone.
Do not give oral sex.
Cold sore lifestyle advice
Avoid triggers, such as sunbeds
Use SPF lip balm in the sun
Drink plenty of fluids
Avoid touching it
Avoid eating salty or acidic foods.
Cold sore referral points
Not started to heal within 10 days.
If it appears infected.
Swollen painful gums + sores in mouth (gingivostomatitis)
Weakened immune system
Cold sore OTC treatment
Aciclovir cream:
Apply as soon as you feel tingling.
Apply liberally every 4 hours for 4 days, maximum 10 days.
Dab, don’t rub in
