Unit 8 notes 7 Flashcards
What are examples of genetic disorders that are caused by recessive alleles
Cystic fibrosis, Tay-sachs disease, phenylketonuria
Define recessive heredity
Most geneitc disorders are caused by recessive alleles
Define cystic fibrosis
condition that cause the formation of thick mucus in the lungs and digestive track
Define tay-sachs disease
causes fats (lipids) to accumulate in the central nervous system (the brain)
Why does tay - sachs disease mainly affect Jews from eastern Europe?
because Jewish people often marry people within their own religon, so this disorder cannot spread to other religons easily
Define phenylkatonuria
The boby can’t change the amino acid phenylalnine into the amino acid trysoine, this can cause damage to the nervous system
Define dominate heredity
Some genetic disorders can only be inherited if you have 2 dominate alleles
What is an example of a genetic disorder that is caused by a dominate alleles?
huntingtons disease
define huntingtons disease
break down of parts of the brain
- onset of this disease does not occur until 30 - 50 years of age
