RNA and Transcription mid term Flashcards
Protein synthesis
The process of building proteins by using the code in DNA
What does RNA stand for?
Ribose (sugar) Nucleic Acid
How are DNA and RNA different?
RNA: Ribose sugar, single stranded, contains uracil
DNA: Doexyribose sugar, double stranded, contains Thymine
Messenger RNA
Carries the instructions to make proteins from nucleus to cytoplasm
Ribosomal RNA
found in the ribosomes
Transfer DNA
carries amino acids to the ribosomes and matches them to the m RNA strand
What are the steps of transcription
step 1: DNA unzips
Step 2: RNA polymerase uses one DNA strand as a templet to assemble mRNA
Step 3:
Transcription
the process where RNA is made from DNA
How does DNA polymerase know where to start making RNA
it starts at a promotor region
promotor region
an area on the DNA strand that signals RNA polymerase to start making RNA
Introns
removed from mRNA, they are cut out and discarded
Extrons
the remaining pieces of RNA that will be used to make a protein
