DNA replication mid term Flashcards
1
Q
DNA replication
A
When DNA in a chromosomes is copied, DNA splits apart and 2 new idenitcle strands
2
Q
Where does DNA replication take place
A
inside the nucleus
3
Q
What are the steps of DNA replication?
A
- DNA strand unzips and each strand acts as templet.
- Nucleotides floating near the strand of DNA begin to bind to the new strands
- Two new strands of DNA are formed
4
Q
what is DNA polymerase?
A
a special enzyme that joins individual nucleotides to produce a new strand of DNA
5
Q
Semi conservative replication
A
each new strand has 1/2 of the original DNA strand
6
Q
When does DNA replication happen?
A
before a cell divides (mitosis) in the s-phase of the interphase
7
Q
What does DNA polymerase do?
A
builds the new strands/sides of DNA
8
Q
What does Helicase do?
A
splits DNA molecule (unzip)
9
Q
What does primase do?
A
build the primer
10
Q
What does Ligase do?
A
connects DNA fragments (glue)
