Translation mid term Flashcards
Translation
The process of changing the info carried by mRNA molecule into a sequence of amino acids that make up a protein
How do Nucleic acids control cell activities?
directing protein synthesis
How many amino acids are there?
20
What do amino acids do?
bond together and make proteins
Structual proteins
hair and nails
transport proteins
hemoglobin in your blood
movment proteins
muscle fiber
defense proteins
antibodies
proteins that regulate cell function
hormones and enzymes
codon
three nitrogenous bases on the mRNA strand
How many different codons are there?
64
What does each codon represent?
amino acid
what does the transport RNA do?
Carries amino acids (which are floating in cytoplasm) to the mRNA strand
anitcodon
is found on tRNA and matches with the codon
How do amino acids get to the mRNA and ribosome
-Each tRNA brings only one 1 amino acid to the mRNA strand
-tRNA has an anticodon that bonds to the codon on the mRNA strand (this ensures the correct amino acid are brought to the mRNA strand)
Primary protein
sequence of amino acids in a protein
secondary proteins
animo acids hydorgen bond to form helices and sheets
tertiary proteins
3D structure of a protein, attractions form between helices and sheets
quaterary protein
protein consisting of more than one amino acid chain
