unit 10 notes 2 Flashcards
Define the germ theory
states that many diseases are caused by micro organsims
Who developed this theory?
Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch
What are Koch’s postulates?
He compared a healthy rat’s blood with an unhealthy rat’s blood to prove the germ theory
Define pathogen
anything that causes a disease and is tramissable
Ex: fungi, viruses, protists
What positive changes in health practices came after the germ theory?
Sanitation, safe handling of food and water, aseptic techniques to keep germs out of the body, vaccination, antibiotics
What are the 3 shapes of bacteria?
Spirilla (spiarl), Bacillus (rod shape), cocci (circular)
What are the basic structures of bacteria?
cell membrane, cell wall (peptidogylcan), cytoplasm, DNA, ribosomes, some have flagella
What kingdoms do bacteria make up?
Archebacteria and Eubacteris kingdoms
Describe Archea bacteria
- Live in extreme enviorments
- Autotrophs
- some use chemosymthesis
Define chemosynthesis
using chemicals to make energy/food
Describe Eubacteria
Found everywhere, do not live in harsh environments, heterotrophs, some are parasites
Define Binary fission
type of asexual reproduction where a bacteria splits in half
What diseases are caused by bacteria?
strep throat, tuberculosis, tetanus, Lyme’s diseases, cavities, cholera, E. coli, salomella
define vector
helps carry pathogen
Define antibiotics
can treat diseases caused by bacteria
What are some good bacteria
Food- cheese and yogurt, Medicane - used to make antibiotics, plants - some bacteria on the roots of plants change nitrogen into a usable forms
