Unit 10 notes 6 Flashcards
What is the plant kingdom like?
All multicellular, all eukaryotic, all autotropic
what are plant cells like?
Have a cell wall, have chloroplast, have chlorophyll, have a square shape
define phtotropism
growing towards the sun
define gravitropism
growing towards the center of gravity
How do plants get what they need from the environment if they can’t move?
Sunlight: gathered by leaves, Gas exchange: takes in CO2 and releases O2, water: absorbed through roots, minerals: absorbed along with water from the soil
How do plants get energy?
they are autotrophs that do photosynthesis
define cuticle
pervent a lot of water lose
How have plants evloved?
ancestors of land plants lived in water and were similar to todays green algae
Define green algae
they are aquatic and absorb water and nutrients through osmosis and diffusion
what were the first plants on earth?
Bryophytes
what were bryophytes like?
found in damp environments, have no vascular tissues so they can’t draw water more than one meter above ground, they move water and nutrients through diffusion and osmosis
Define vascular plants
plants that have tube-like cells that transport water, food, and other material
what are the types of vascular tissues?
Xylem and phloem
Define xylem tissues
tubes that move water up the tree
define phloem tissues
tubes that move nutrients and sugar down the tree
why are vascular tissues important?
- these vascular tissues make it possible to move fluid through their bodies against gravity
- tree rings form from dead xylem
What are the 2 catagories of vascular plants?
seedless plants and seed plants
what are the 2 catagories of seed plants?
Gymnosperms and Angiosperms
What is a seed?
a plants embryo and a food supply, found in a protective covering
- seeds are protected by fruit or cones
define gymnosperm plants
non-flowering plants, seeds are protected by cones
Ex: evergreen trees
Define angiosperm plants
flowering plants seeds are protected y fruits
Ex: apple tree
What are the 2 catagories a angiosperm plants?
Monocots and Dicots
Define monocot plants
have one seed leaf
Ex: corn
Define Dicot plants
have 2 seed leafs Ex: kidney beans
