Unit 10 notes 3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure of a virus like?
A
- They have a nucleic acid core (DNA) surrounded by a protein coat
- Inside the capsid is DNA and/or RNA
- Sometime capsid is surrounded by an envelope with proteins
2
Q
What are some common viruses?
A
Rabies, Poilo, Flu, HIV, Common cold, Hepatitus, Chicken pox, Mono, Shingles, Leukemia
3
Q
What are some characteristics of viruses?
A
- they are not alive
- not apart of the 6 kingdoms
- need a host cell to reproduce
4
Q
Define host cell
A
a living cell in which a virus replicates
5
Q
How do viruses reproduce?
A
- The virus enters the cell
- Virus injects it’s DNA into the cell
- The genetic material takes control of the host cells and uses it to reproduce
- Host cell breaks open and releases newly formed viruses
6
Q
What is the difference between the lytic cycle and the lysogenic cycle?
A
The lysogenic cycle has a pause in it
7
Q
Define vaccines
A
Substances that help our bodies fight viruses
