Unit 4: 9.4 Flashcards
Defined Boundary
These boundaries have been explicitly stated in a written legal document. Actual points on Earth are described in WORDS, of how landscape is/will be.
Examples: South Sudan and North Sudan making a contract in order to decide on the boundary after the split
Delimit Boundaries
DRAWing lines onto a map in coordinance with a legal agreement
Examples: What eventually happened after the Berlin Conference when European countries conquered Africa and altered the already standing boundaries
Demarcated Boundaries
To place PHYSICAL objects to outline a boundary between point A and point B
Examples: There is a fence between my house and my neighbor’s house
E.G. Fences, signs, steel posts, and concrete pillars
Administered Boundary
Manages the way borders are maintained and how goods cross them
Antecedent Boundary
A border established BEFORE an area becomes human settled
Ante = before
Examples: The border between the US and Canada was established before settlers really got there
E.G. Pyrenees, 49th parallel
Subsequent Boundary
A border drawn in an area that had been settled and where cultural landscapes ALREADY exist or are being established. That have been changed due to a CONFLICT.
Examples: North Sudan and South Sudan being split up after already being established. Germany-Poland after 1945
Consequent Boundary
A type of subsequent boundary that takes into account the differences that exists within 2+ CULTUREs SEPARATING distinct groups.
Consequent = Cultural
Examples: Northern Ireland & The Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland majorly Protestant; whereas, Ireland is majorly Catholic. Hence the cultural separation.
Superimposed Boundary
A border drawn over existing ones by an outside (conquering) force.* Lines laid down for political reasons OVER TOP of cultural ones. Forcibly put into place by outside organizations.
Examples: Modern state of Africa after the Berlin Conference (refer to flash card).
*NOT accounting for culture
Geometric Boundary
A mathematically drawn boundary that typically follows lines of latitude and longitude or Is a straight-line arc between 2 points. Usually the only straight lines found on a map.
Examples: Western United States state boundaries such as Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, United States, Canada, Libya, & Egypt
Relic
A FORMER boundary with no more official function. Serves as a reminder of a border that was ONCE enforced.
Relic - antique/artifact
Examples: Berlin Wall, Great Wall of China, Castle walls, etc.
United nations convention on the law of the sea
(UNCIOS) this is the international agreement that established the structure of the maritime boundaries
E.G. China put the ear plugs in during this and does not follow the rules and makes claims to water that is not constructionally there’s.
Examples: This is such a big deal that the Barbie movie was banned in the place where the water ACTUALLY belongs to, because they used a map that had china’s claims to the land.
Exclusive Economic Zone
(EEZ) An area that extends 200 national miles from a states coast; a state with sole access to resources found within the waters or beneath the sea floor
Natural / Physical Boundaries
Using PHYSICAL features to determine where one place STARTS & another STOPS.
Advantage: easy to differentiate where the boundary starts & ends (demarcated).
Examples: Rio Grande between U.S & Mexico, Mississippi between IL and Iowa, etc. Border between Malaysia and Indonesia on Borneo E.G. Mountains, water, desert, etc.
