Unit 1: 2.3 Flashcards
Graduated Symbols Map
Graduated symbols map is when symbols represents the amount of data (differently sized)
Examples: GRADuated SYMBOLS = SYMBOLS GRADually getting bigger/ smaller
Chloropleth
This thematic map uses colors / shadowing to represent categories of data for predetermined
Isoline Map
Isoline map show specific characteristics using lines to connect data points
Examples: isoLINE = LINEs
Dot Map
Dots on a dot map are used to show specific observations / events showing useful statistics
Examples: Crimes, births, & accidents
Cartogram Map
Cartogram is a statistical data & geographic location. Showcases relative size of an area based on particular attribute
Examples: The larger the area the higher amount of XYZ… there is
Robinson Projection
The shapes of the continents become more distorted the farther away from the equator they become
Examples: A globe - like look that seems real, distort size & shape, but not too much, imprecise measurements, extreme distortion @ poles: flat on poles & compressed near equators
Mercator Projection
The continents share & direction are maintained; however, the continent sizes are distorted
Examples: Distorts area, size is distorted increasingly near poles, shows true direction, good for navigation purposes
Azimuthal projection
A portion of Earth is shown from a specific point, a flattened disk-shaped
Examples: Preserves direction when used from North Pole, No country seen as center
Gall Peters Projection
The relative size of the continents is displayed clearly; however, the shapes of the continents are distorted
Examples: Shows true direction, precise area is relative, distortion of shape, elongated continents appear
Cartographers
A person that makes maps
Examples: A cartographer created the first map
Absolute Distance
This is when an amount of distance is measured using a standard unit of length
Relative Distance
Relative Distance is when distance is measured using only things such as time and money
Examples: A ride share from Manhattan to LaGuardia airport costs $40. About 7 hours to fly to New York City to from Paris, France
Absolute Direction
Cardinal direction (North, East, South, and West).
Examples: Never Eat Soggy Waffles
Relative Direction
Relative direction is directions (left, right, up, down).
Examples: L, R, U, D
Map Scale (S)
Map scale is mathematical relationship between what the map is showing & the size of the map
Examples: Small scale covers a LARGE area with SMALL detail
