Voluntary Migration
Type of migration in which people make the choice to move
Forced Migration
Compelled to move because of economic, political, cultural, environmental factors
Transnational Migration
When people retain strong cultural emotional, and financial ties with their initial country of origin
Internal migration
Movement that happens within a certain place (country)
Examples: Moving from Florida to California
Friction of Distance
The longer the journey the more time, effort, and money put in
Examples: Going to Ghana will take more time, effort, and money than going to Florida (from Illinois).

The movement of herds between cooler pastures and higher elevations

Examples: the intended destination is Ghana so I move from Illinois to Belgium than finally to Ghana

Something that offsets the original plan but presents a new
Examples: Causes migrants to put moving on hold by choice
Guest Workers
Travels to a new country to do temporary labor
Examples: In Qatar they hired guest workers to build the stadium for the World Cup
Circular Migration
Migrant workers move in and out of their country of origin and where their temporary jobs are

Refugees
A person forced to leave their country due to fear of death and/or persecution
Examples: There was a rule that if migrants could get one foot on dry land they would be able to apply for asylum as a refugee
Asylum
Getting protection from a country as a right
Examples: In order to apply for asylum you must first apply for refugee
Internally Displaced Persons
Similar to refugee these are people who were forced to flee were they originated because fo fear for their lives
Examples: These people are not refugees because they have not fled the country to another one; hence, internally displaced person
