Territoriality
The attempt to influence / control over a geographic area. Connection of culture, economic system to the land.
Colonialism
The practice of claiming and dominating oversea territories
Neo-colonialism
The use of economic, political, cultural or other pressures to influence other countries.
Examples: bribery and/or blackmail etc.
Choke point
A narrow, strategic passageway to another place though which it is difficult to pass
Examples: Goods and oils travel through trade through boats that go through the choke points
Shatterbelts
A region where states (countries) form, join, and break up because of ongoing, sometimes violet conflicts among parties because they are caught between the interests of more powerful countries (states).
Self-determination
The right of all people to determine their own political status
Examples: I have the choice to be a democrat or a republican
Imperialism
The push to create an empire by exercising power, fore, and influence in order to control other nations (people?)

Berlin Conference
A meeting in order to discuss and define the boundaries between states (countries). Specifically Africa; yet, not by the people of Africa
This is often referred to as the Scramble for Africa where European countries rushed to call dibs on African countries suspected to have gold.
Devolution
The process that occurs when the central power in a state is broken up among regional authorities within it’s borders
