Political Geography
The study of the way the world is organized as a reflection of the power different groups have over it
State
A politically organized independent territory with a government, defined borders permanent population
Examples: State = country
Sovereignty
The hit of a government to control and defend their territory
Examples: We have sovernreignty over our homes
Nations
A cultural entity made up of people who have forged a common identity
Examples: Shared language, religion, heritage, or ethnicity
Nation-state
A politically organized / recognized territory that is composed of those whom consider themselves a nation. Where the nation (people) and state (country) are the same
Examples: Japan, Germany
Multi-state nation
People who share a cultural or ethnic background but live in more than one country
Examples: Multiple states (countries) with the same nationality
Irredentism
A states (country)’s attempts to acquire territory in neighboring states. Inhabited by those of similar nations (people)?
Multinational state
A country with various ethnicities and cultures living within it’s borders
Examples: Multiple nationalities in one state (country).
Autonomous
Havig the authority to govern territories independently of the national government
Examples: Having a sperate currency
Semi-autonomous
Describing a region that is given partial authority to govern it’s region
Examples: England in the United Kingdom having such power that people believe it to be its own country. However it is only semi-autonomous
Stateless Nation
A people united by culture, language, history, and tradition but do not possess a state (country).
Examples: A nation without a country
