Unit 3.2c Flashcards
When would you use a representative sample?
When it’s impractical to measure every individual in the population
What should you do if there is a large amount of variety in a population?
Use a larger sample size
What sampling allows members of a population an equal chance of being selected?
Random sampling
When is random sampling effective?
In large groups with uniform distribution
What 2 advantages of random sampling?
- straight forward
- no bias
What’s a disadvantage of random sampling?
Results in poor representation of the overall population
What sampling means members of a population are selected at regular intervals?
Systematic sampling
What’s an advantage of systematic sampling?
Provides a more representative sample of the overall population
What 2 disadvantages of systematic sampling?
- not all members have an equal selection chance
- subject to selection bias
What sampling divides the entire population into different sub groups, and then randomly select the final subjects proportionally from the different groups?
Stratified sampling
What’s an advantage of stratified sampling?
Highly representative of the overall population
What’s 2 disadvantages of stratified sampling?
- requires researchers to know the proportions of each group prior to sampling
- Must have up-to-date population data
