What must be given if human studies are to go ahead?
Informed consent from participants
In a humans study, if a participant is under 16, how is consent given?
Parent or guardian must provide informed consent
What is the humans main right if they are involved in scientific research?
They can withdraw all their data at any time during the investigation
Must there be confidentiality?
Yes, even if the participant removes themselves from the experiment confidentiality must always be maintained
If humans are involved in investigations, what must not happen to them?
No harm can come to them
Why before an experiment must there be a risk assessment?
It takes into account the safety of humans or animals involved in any impact that there may be on the environment
What limits the potential of the misuse of studies and data in an experiment?
Regulations, policies and licensing given by the government
What are the 3Rs used in animal studies?
Reduction
Refinement
Replacement
What is reduction?
Any strategy that will result in fewer animals being used in research
What is refinement?
The modification of experimental procedures to minimise pain
What is replacement?
Methods that avoid or replace the use of animals in research
