Unit 1.5d Flashcards
What is apoptosis?
It’s programmed cell death
What triggers apoptosis?
Internal death signals or external death signal molecules
What is an examples of an internal death signal?
DNA damage
Whats an examples of an external death signalling molecule?
Lymphocytes
What do internal death signals activate?
They activate the p-53 tumour suppressor protein
How do external death signalling molecules go about apoptosis?
They bind to the surface receptor proteins, which triggers a protein Cascade within the cytoplasm
What do you both internal and external signals result in?
They both result in the activation of caspases
What is caspases?
It’s a type of protease molecule
What does caspases do to the cell?
It destroys the cell by triggering the degradation of any protein molecules.
What is apoptosis essential for?
The development or metamorphosis of organisms
What’s an example of organism metamorphosis?
Tadpoles turning into frogs
What is an example of organism development?
Humans having hands instead of webbed fingers
