Unit 1.4d(ii) Flashcards
What two types of photoreceptor cells are found within the eyes retina?
Rod cells and cone cells
Do rod cells work in bright or dim lights?
Dim
Do rod calls have colour perception?
No
Do cone cells work in bright or dim light?
Bright light
Are done cell responsible for colour perception?
Yes, they’re responsible for colour vision
What are photoreceptors in the eye made of?
They are made of retinal and opsin
What is retinal?
It’s a light sensitive molecule
What is opsin?
Opsin us a membrane protein
What is the retinal, opsin complex called in rod cells?
Rhodopsin
Firstly what happens when the retinal in a rod cell absorbs 1 photon of light?
The rhodopsin change’s conformation to become photo excited
What does photo excited rhodopsin activate?
It’s activates hundreds of transducin molecules (a G-protein)
What does each transducin activate?
One PDE enzyme
What does PDE stand for?
Phosphodiesterase
What does PDE catalyse?
The hydrolysis, so therefore the breakdown, of cGMP molecules
What does cGMP stand for?
Cyclic GMP
